Frequently Asked Questions About Reiki
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese energy therapy that is very relaxing, yet invigorating. The name comes from the Japanese words “rei”, meaning Universal and “ki”, meaning Life Energy.
How can it help me?
Reiki helps you relax, reduce stress and enables you to deal with life’s events. It brings inner peace and harmony. There are many documented cases where Reiki greatly enhances one’s natural healing ability.
Do I have to believe in it for it to work?
No, you don’t have to believe in Reiki for it to work. However, to become an effective Reiki practitioner you do need to believe in it.
How does Reiki work?
Reiki – Universal Life Energy – flows through our body all the time. When the energy path becomes partially blocked we can experience physical, emotional or spiritual dis-ease. During a Reiki session Reiki energy is “pushed” through our energy channels, thereby unblocking them and relieving our dis-ease.
Is Reiki a religion?
Religions are usually involved with issues such as heaven and hell, sin and salvation etc. and have a doctrine or code that one must believe in, in order to be a part of the religion. Reiki does not deal with these things. Reiki is a simple healing technique. It does not require one give up ones religion or changes ones religious beliefs in any way to practice it. Most Christians who practice Reiki state that Reiki brings them closer to God, to Christ and to the Holy Spirit and because it is a method of healing, it helps them fulfill their Christian calling to help others.
Does Reiki contradict my religion?
No. Reiki is compatible with all religions. It augments your religion and strengthens your belief no matter what your belief is.
What is the difference between Therapeutic or Healing Touch and Reiki?
As originally formulated Therapeutic Touch is the exchange of energy from one person to another. Reiki is the channel of Universal Life Energy through the practitioner to the client. In Reiki the energy comes through the practitioner not from the practitioner.
Can anyone learn Reiki?
Yes. Anyone can learn Reiki. Even children!
What are the different “levels” and what do they mean in terms of what I can do?
There are 4 levels of Reiki training. Levels 1, 2, 3 and Master or Teacher. You can be a Reiki practitioner with just Level 1. The other levels deepen your understanding and ability to channel Reiki energy.
What are the different symbols and are they really needed?
The symbols taught in the Level 2 and 3 classes are used to focus intention. They are not necessary but are very helpful. One of the basic tenets of energy work is:
Energy + Intention = Healing
These symbols help us focus our intention, which when combined with Reiki energy promotes healing of the mind, body and spirit.
What is an attunement and are they really necessary?
Attunements are similar to the laying on of hands that religious leaders go through. Although not necessary, such ceremonies do increase the strength of one’s connection to the Universe and are a part of most, if not all, Reiki training.
What is taught in the different Reiki classes?
Level 1 provides the training needed to perform basic Reiki on oneself and others. Level 2 expands upon Level 1 through the use of tools to focus one’s intention and connect more strongly to Reiki. Level 3 adds on to Level 2 with an additional tool to increase one’s intention and focus. The Master Lever provides the training needed to teach Reiki to others. Typically Level 3 and Master Level are taught simultaneously. The additional classes required for the Clinical Reiki Certification provides traditional medical environment background and training.
How long does it take to become a Reiki Master?
This is really up to the individual sense of their ability. However, I suggest that one be a Level 1 for at least 3 weeks before taking Level 2 training. Level 3/Master training can be done as soon as the student and their Master are comfortable that they are ready.
Can Reiki be used with other modalities?
Yes. In fact, once you become a Reiki practitioner it will be difficult to not use Reiki with other modalities.
Is it necessary to actually touch a person to give them Reiki?
No, although for beginners it is easier to sense the Reiki energy flow if there is actual physical contact.
How do we know that healing is appropriate for Christians to do?
In I Corinthians 14:1 Paul tell us to eagerly desire spiritual gifts. In I Corinthians 12: 28 Paul says that healing is one of the gifts. Paul also says that each of the gifts is best expressed with love. Also, Jesus is quoted in John 14:12 as saying, "I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I go to the Father." We know that Jesus practiced laying on hands type healing, therefore, it is scriptural for Christian to practice healing by laying on hands.
